WILDLIFE

IN THE NET!  Lorelei Kraft, former Portage Lake resident,  sent these photos she took of a deer   feeding outside her window at her residence, near county highway 40. Lorelei was told that people interested in collecting antlers, sometimes secure  netting above  where deer  feed and when the deer raise their heads, the antlers get stuck in the net.  Hopefully, the antlers would fall off while struggling to get loose from the net.  Apparently this guy's antlers weren't ready to fall off yet or the netting wasn't secured very tightly. Unusual photos!

This tiny, saw-whet owl visited our house  several times during January. Saw-whet owls  weigh  2.6 to 3.9 ounces and measure 6.7-8.6 inches in length. It  was probably looking for mice coming out to feed under nearby bird feeders. These owls  may kill up to six mice at one time, without consuming any but store or cache them in safe places.  These  "freezer meals" are thawed out  by "brooding" the carcass and an owl may eat only  the head  of a mouse if food is plentiful.
