Public Access  Signs Emphasize  Prevention of Invasive Species.
Paul  Peterson and Jerry Knoblich  installed this "Stop
Aquatic Hitchhikers!" sign at  the public access  on August 14. The logo and slogan  are  part of a national  program  to  help prevent the spread of invasive species so the lake association purchased one of the signs from COLA for $30.
A fourth invasive specie I.D. card picturing the spiny water flea and purple loosestrife was added to our  "Welcome to Portage Lake"  sign. Other cards  identify zebra mussels, curly leaf pondweed and Eurasian water milfoil.
Invasive Species Awareness Event  Held on Labor Day Weekend.
Over Labor Day weekend, six Portage volunteers spent twenty-eight hours at the public access conducting boat and trailer inspections  for any vegetation clinging to them.
Residents pictured in the back are Glenn Elders, Dale Rogers, and Jerry Knoblich.  In the front are  Marilyn Peterson and Lynda Rogers. Volunteer Linda Elders is not pictured.
The purpose of this event was to educate  people to become more aware of invasive species.  Aquatic hitchhikers are any plants, animals, or microscopic organisms that hitch a ride on boats and trailers from one lake to another.
